A selection of videos from the Rutland ichthyosaur excavation.

Care and attention were used at all times when tentatively cleaning the bones from the ichthyosaur. In the video, Nigel Larkin employs one of the many conservation techniques used in the field.

Conservationist Nigel Larkin is seen cleaning the bones of a rear limb from the ichthyosaur using water and a small brush. This cleaning process removes a layer of clay before the skeleton is 3D scanned. Some of the darker bones are still wet, indicating the areas that have been cleaned. Thoroughly cleaning the bones ensures that the digital 3D model will have sharper resolution, allowing elements of the ichthyosaur to emerge more clearly.

Could you hear the drone scanning the site in the background !
